Effective Verruca Solutions

Our swift treatment in Newtownards provides fast, targeted results for stubborn verrucas. Verrucae are plantar warts that commonly occur on the soles of the feet or around the toe area. They are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is contagious through direct person-to-person contact. There are various forms of HPV, which all relate to various parts of the human body.

The most common appearance is that of a small cauliflower-type growth on the soles of your feet with tiny black dots. If it is painful when you pinch the area (like when you squeeze a spot), you are likely to have a verruca. If you are unsure, seek advice from our podiatrist.

Verrucae are harmless but can be uncomfortable and painful. Hard skin can form over the top of the verruca, increasing the discomfort in this area. There are also some strains of the virus that spread very quickly and can look unsightly.

In the first instance, avoid touching or scratching a verruca as it may spread into a cluster of warts. Instead, cover it up with a plaster. Evidence suggests that, in many cases, verrucae will disappear of their own accord, within six months for children but taking longer for adults (up to two years). This is because the body’s immune system recognises the presence of the virus and fights the infection naturally but it can take many months for this to happen. If it is painless, no treatment may be required as some treatments can be painful, especially for children, and can cause side-effects.

For painful and/or unsightly verrucae or ones that are spreading, we offer a few different treatments. Our podiatrist will assess your general well-being and foot health before deciding on a treatment plan.

This may include:

Debridement of the hard skin to reduce pressure and provide comfort.

Acid-based treatments, which are stronger than regular over the counter treatments from your local pharmacy

Needling for Verrucas

Needling is a minimally invasive procedure that can be an effective treatment option for stubborn verrucas. It involves using a sterile needle to create tiny punctures in the verruca. This action aims to stimulate the body’s immune system to recognize and attack the virus causing the verruca.

Before proceeding with needling, our podiatrist will conduct a thorough assessment of your verruca. This will include:

  • Visual examination: Assessing the size, location, and number of verrucas.
  • Pain assessment: Determining the level of discomfort you’re experiencing.
  • Medical history: Reviewing your medical history to rule out any contraindications to the procedure. Including a detailed vascular assessment with a doppler.
  • Local anaesthetic: A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area.
  • Needling: The podiatrist will use a sterile needle to create multiple tiny punctures in the verruca.
  • Dressing: The area will be cleaned and dressed.
  • Follow-up: You’ll be advised on proper aftercare and scheduled for a follow-up appointment to monitor the verruca’s response to treatment.
  • Healing: The needling procedure typically causes minimal discomfort and requires little to no downtime. You can usually resume normal activities immediately.
  • Minimal discomfort: The procedure is generally well-tolerated.
  • Quick recovery: You can typically resume normal activities immediately.
  • Effective: Needling can be an effective treatment option for stubborn verrucas that haven’t responded to other treatments. In 75% of cases only one treatment is required.
  • 1 in 4 patients may require additional treatments depending on the success of the initial procedure and/or the number of verruca’s / warts to be treated.

Remember: Needling is just one of the treatment options available for verrucas. Our podiatrist will discuss the most appropriate treatment plan for you based on your individual needs and preferences.
